Safety work on the Route du Littoral coast road on La Réunion

Project

Type
Safety engineering
Subsidiary
ROCS

The RN1 Route du Littoral is a major arterial road on the island of La Réunion, linking Saint-Denis, the administrative centre of the island, with Le Port, its economic centre. Since this dual carriageway runs at the foot of a geologically unstable cliff, the teams of NGE subsidiary ROCS are working to make the rock face safer by installing rockfall protection netting.

It is one of the largest rockfall protection construction projects undertaken. Before this work was completed, more than 50,000 vehicles were exposed to the threat of 120 rockfalls per year. To protect them, we have installed gabion mesh and rockfall protection netting on the cliff and at the foot of the slope over a distance of 3 km.
