NGE mobilises to preserve Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
23 October 2025, Dakar, Sénégal – – NGE is carrying out preservation works on Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Financed by the World Bank and commissioned by the WACA agency on behalf of the ministère sénégalais de l’Environnement, du Développement Durable et de la Transition Écologique, the project aims to counter coastal erosion caused by marine currents and rising sea levels. By building a breakwater to protect the island, NGE reaffirms its commitment to developing resilient infrastructure to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The 1.3 km-long dike will be built using basalt rocks, requiring over 100,000 tonnes of riprap. Materials will be transported from Dakar Port by barges over a 15-month period. This coastal defence will reduce wave impact along the island’s shores, helping protect it from erosion.
